RIYADH: The 87th National Day celebrations in the Kingdom took center stage on Saturday with an atmosphere pervaded by euphoric excitement engendered by the various activities lined up to mark the annual historic event.
“The National Day is a precious occasion in which the sons of this country remember the historical saga that was made by the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz,” Minister of Culture and Information Awwad bin Saleh Al-Awwad said.
Al-Awwad said that “the noble sons of King Abdul Aziz followed him with a wise vision and a sound approach toward the foundations of a strong civilized state that united under the banner of eternal unification.”
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Sawah congratulated the people, the king and crown prince on the occasion of the 87th National Day.
Al-Sawah also lauded the Kingdom’s wise leadership for the successful march and rapid development being witnessed by Saudi Arabia at all levels.
He also expressed gratitude and appreciation for the Kingdom’s ongoing development and growth under the visionary leadership that paid special attention to the telecommunications and information technology sector in the country.
In keeping with the occasion, the Saudi capital is decked out in green — the color of the national flag — as an indication of patriotic enthusiasm, while the Kingdom is celebrating the National Day with traditional gaiety and patriotic fervor.
The early hours of Sept. 23 witnessed the birth of the first child at the King Saud Medical City on this auspicious day, which was announced by the hospital on its Twitter account.
The hospital held a celebration after the preparation of one medical room with national words, green shawls and clips containing the words “Homeland in our hearts.”
Festivities showed people — both young and old — dancing in the streets or in programs held in various venues such as hotels, auditoriums and convention centers in celebration of the historic event.
Television channels showed programs which featured young Saudi girls deftly and gracefully dancing in their white dresses with belts in green which symbolized the Kingdom’s color.
Many Saudi nationals were also seen driving cars painted in the national color to celebrate the 87th National Day. Boys were seen enthusiastically distributing national flags and sweets to motorists waiting for traffic signals to turn green on the Kingdom’s various roads.
There were also green lights in underpasses and on bridges, as well as banners and posters with congratulatory remarks and photos of the king and crown prince.
With the Saudi people in a celebratory mode, King Fahd and Khurais roads experienced traffic snarls, with cars moving at a snail’s pace on Friday night. Heavy traffic was also expected Saturday night, as in the past, when the citizens of the city go out to drive the Saudi capital’s main thoroughfares in a celebratory mode.
The Saudi nationals’ patriotic zeal and enthusiasm also rubbed off on expatriate workers, who were also excited and joined local counterparts in their celebration.

JEDDAH: Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir highlighted Saudi Arabia’s international achievements on the occasion of the country’s 87th National Day.
In a statement, Al-Jubeir said the Kingdom’s policies were based on deep-rooted Islamic faith, as well as moderation, openness, dialogue and cooperation. He stressed that Saudi Arabia had worked with the international community to establish world peace, and would continue to do so.
He also explained that country’s foreign policy is based on respect for the sovereign rights of other countries and non-interference in their internal affairs, respect for international law and taking an effective role in regional and international organizations.
Al-Jubeir stressed that National Day is “an occasion which remains a source of pride for the homeland.”
Saudi Arabia, the minister said, “thanks to Allah and the directives of King Salman and the crown prince,” has not only called for concerted global efforts to solve international problems, but has also taken the initiative in several causes, from the latest developments in the ongoing issue of Palestine to rallying support against the scourge of terrorism and extremism.
In so doing, Al-Jubeir claimed, Saudi Arabia showed its determination to serve not just its national interests, but to support Arab and Islamic issues and serve international peace and security.

Women allowed into stadium as Saudi Arabia promotes national pride — part of reform push

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is celebrating the 87th anniversary of its founding this weekend with an unprecedented array of concerts and performances, including allowing women into King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh for a Saturday evening operetta — a first in the conservative Islamic Kingdom.
The festivities are part of a government bid to boost national pride and improve the quality of life for Saudis.
Also on offer is a concert in the Red Sea city of Jeddah featuring 11 Arab musicians, plus fireworks, air acrobatics and traditional folk dance shows.
The events are the latest entertainment sponsored by the government as part of the Vision 2030 reform program launched two years ago to diversify the economy away from oil, create whole new sectors to employ young citizens and open up Saudis’ cloistered lifestyles.
Saudi rulers are also starting to reform areas once the exclusive domain of the clergy, such as education and the law, and have promoted elements of national identity that have no religious component, or pre-date Islam.
They have increased National Day celebrations that were previously attacked by clerics as undermining religious feeling, and are promoting heritage sites, like Nabatean rock temples, once seen as embarrassing in the land of Islam.
Saudi flags and green billboards, often bearing the face of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed, have gone up across Riyadh this week, and at night skyscrapers are flooded in green light — the national color.
Companies from telecoms operators to furniture stores have launched patriotic-themed marketing campaigns offering discounts for the holiday weekend.
The General Entertainment Authority (GEA), the government agency organizing the National Day festivities, expects some 1.5 million Saudis to attend events in 17 cities over four days.
Vision 2030 reforms are intended to capture up to a quarter of the $20 billion currently spent overseas by Saudis, who are accustomed to traveling abroad to see shows and visit amusement parks in nearby tourist hub Dubai or further afield. This weekend’s events, though, are free to the public.

“The system of bankruptcy, the commercial mortgage system, franchise system and e-commerce system have been already completed,” he noted.
The minister said his ministry set up a business improvement committee to launch the initiative for business practices, “Meras,” to improve the investment environment in the Kingdom
The “Meras” initiative aims to increase the contribution of the private sector to the Kingdom’s GDP, also to boost the national economy, for the realization of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
The main components of this initiative include “Meras” comprehensive service centers, “Meras” e-platform, consolidated access to business services, the interactive business startup guide, providing basic services from the private sector such as opening a bank account for the enterprise.

Saudi Arabia provides humanitarian aid without discrimination: KSRelief chief

WASHINGTON: Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, adviser at the royal court and general supervisor of the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid (KSRelief) recently highlighted the humanitarian efforts and work by the Kingdom represented by the center to help those in need all over the world.
Al-Rabeeah met with representatives of the international and American media at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington and stressed that the Kingdom provides humanitarian aid without discrimination.
He noted that the Kingdom has helped people in need in 38 different countries on four continents.
The KSRelief chief explained the special role of the Kingdom, represented by the center, in the humanitarian field, its impartial actions and abidance by international humanitarian law that conforms to Islamic Sharia, in seeking to preserve dignity and integrity of those in need and ease their pain.
He said that the country that has benefitted most from the Kingdom’s humanitarian aid is Yemen. Houthi militias have besieged cities and blocked medical and relief items. However, that has not thwarted the center’s pursuit to assist all Yemenis.
Al-Rabeeah talked about the challenges faced by KSRelief operations in Yemen, especially the blockade enforced by armed Houthi militias in many areas, preventing aid from reaching its destination. These militias, he stressed, looted large amounts of aid destined for the Yemeni people between 2015 and 2017, including 65 shiploads of aid and 124 relief convoys.
The Kingdom granted more than $76 million to the Yemeni Ministry of Health, the Yemeni people, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, as well as 550 tons of medications distributed through all Yemen’s regions.
Al-Rabeeah noted that the center targeted women and children in Yemen by implementing many projects in the field of education, security, and food and water supplies.
The rate of the spread of cholera in Yemen decreased over time thanks to the center’s efforts, he said.
He also said that the Kingdom has received and assisted Syrian refugees as its guests and supported millions of other refugees in nearby countries, stressing the Kingdom’s concern about the humanitarian situation in Iraq, Somalia and Myanmar.
The head of KSRelief noted that aid provided by the Kingdom in 2014 reached 1.9 percent of the country’s GDP, which exceeded the rate of 0.07 percent decided by the UN. The Kingdom also received refugees from Yemen and Syria and treated them as guests.

JEDDAH: Kitack Lim, the secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), said Saudi Arabia has been playing a key role in global affairs since its establishment, thanks to its geographical location despite it being a young country.
The IMO chief expressed thanks and appreciation to the Saudi government for its constant support in enhancing the security and safety of navigation in the western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden, and in making the Prince Mohammed bin Naif Academy for Maritime Security Sciences and Studies an excellent location for training.
Through this academy, the IMO has managed to work with its partners to develop and implement training programs embodying the desired curriculum in different specialties, he said.
He extended congratulations to the Saudi government and people on the occasion of the 87th National Day.
He said he was pleased to be in the Kingdom and attend the ceremony of the academy marking Global Maritime Day which is being celebrated under the theme of “Connecting ships, ports and people.”
He stressed that the compulsory reduction of sulfur content in ship fuel by 2020 is considered evidence of the regulatory action adopted by the IMO and member countries to control harmful emissions of the shipping sector in addition to its major mission of keeping maritime safety and peace.
For his part, Gen. Awwad Al-Bluwi, commander of Border Guards, said the Kingdom, since its establishment, has sought to strengthen maritime security in the region in light of its vast coastal areas which extend more than 1,762 nautical miles along the Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba and the Arabian Gulf, in addition to the presence of important sea lanes and the volume of global trade passing through these lanes.
He stressed the importance of working with regional and international organizations, particularly the IMO, “which has succeeded in leading regional programs for combating piracy and minimizing the phenomenon in the region.”
He expressed hope that the IMO would support efforts aimed to safeguard the security of ships and port facilities, and called on other partners such as the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and Interpol to support the region ensuring peace and security.
Al-Bluwi said the first international symposium on border security and safety would be held in Jeddah at the end of next month.
For his part, President of the General Transport Authority (GTA) Rimaih Al-Rimaih said the Kingdom’s celebrations of Global Maritime Day reflect its pride in entering into partnership with the IMO and its contribution to the development of the sea transport sector, and its protection of the safety of the seas and the lives of ships’ staff.
Cooperation between the Kingdom and the IMO also represents a clear model for the concept of a partnership to enhance sea peace and security, he said.

RIYADH: Residents and visitors in Riyadh are waiting for the return of the “Roads of Arabia” exhibition of Saudi archaeological treasures, which has been exhibited in international museums since 2010.
The exhibition will arrive at the National Museum in Riyadh for 50 days starting Tuesday, November 7, 2017, the same day the Kingdom’s Antiquities Forum will be held, organized by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), supported by King Salman.
The exhibition concluded at the end of August at the Seoul National Museum in South Korea, the exhibition’s second stop on its Asian tour after Beijing last year, which was the eleventh stop on its international tour. The artifacts had been hosted by four European and five US cities.
In Europe, it was displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2010; La Caixa Foundation in Barcelona; the Hermitage Museum in Petersburg and the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
In the US, the exhibition was hosted by the Sakler Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, followed by the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh; the Fine Art Museum in Houston, Texas; the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri; and finally, at the Asian Arts Museum in San Francisco.

Jeddah key destination for tourism in Kingdom
Jeddah province has topped other areas in the Kingdom as the main tourism destination in the areas of exhibitions and conferences, local media said.
Jeddah has maintained its tourism, economic and commercial importance thanks to its geographical location and proximity to international travel and trade, and foreign markets.
In the first half of the current year, Jeddah hosted 1,536 functions, or 29.9 percent of the Kingdom’s overall functions.
Jeddah’s importance also comes from its 350 shopping and commercial centers, or nearly 25 percent of the total centers in the Kingdom. For its unique location, Jeddah attracted a series of global companies, economic institutions and hotels. It also dominated other provinces in the Makkah region in hosting functions, conferences and exhibitions.
The director general of the SCTH in the Makkah region, Mohammed Al-Amri said Jeddah has 59 official locations to host functions, conferences and exhibitions, or 20 percent of the authorized locations in the Kingdom. Makkah region maintains 90 authorized locations, or 31 percent of the Kingdom’s total, he said.
He said some 1,682 functions and conferences were held in the Makkah region, where Jeddah alone held 1,536 functions.
Al-Amri attributed to the strong infrastructure in the Makkah region, in general, and Jeddah, in particular, which qualified them to host conferences and events organized by government and private sector agencies, and attended by thousands of participants from inside and outside the Kingdom.
